Who: Alexandra Bolintineanu
Short Description: This session will provide entry points into teaching undergraduate students to do close reading of literary and historical texts using digital tools that can be used in-browser, without the need to install any additional software.
Together, we investigate a passage from the Middle English Book of John Mandeville, using text visualization platforms such as Voyant, basic text encoding (TEI + XSLT), the text-based video game tool Twine, and the mapping platform Neatline. Each approach is illustrated through brief teaching case studies (some successes, some failures).
This is a hands-on session, where people can explore the tools in-browser (please bring your own machine with Chrome or Firefox web browsers). This session is intended for beginners.
